LA Marathon

My intention for the race was to beat my first marathon (6:20 in 2015) and take the time to self reflect. Cliffnotes version: done and done.

The day before the race, I ran a shake out run with Nike and watched the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials with Kelly Roberts. I won’t go into the details but you can read Kelly’s post for more. Kelly and I had some real talk which made me think about why I started running and why I continue to do it. So on race day, I thought about this even more while putting one foot in front of the other for 6 hours 7 minutes and 50 seconds.

Here are the highlights of my run:

  • Crossing the start line with my MIP babes: Mae, Ron and new friend, Melissa.
  • Running the first half of the race with Kristol. Thanks to her, I didn’t burn out as quickly as I could have.
  • Stumbling into Jenay and Albert at Echo Park. I also ran into Albert later in the race.
  • Oprah cheering us on while passing through. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It was such a lovely surprise!
  • Seeing so many familiar faces on the course: Eunice, Kelly, my cousin Jr., Josue, Diana, the BlackList crew, and Karla.
  • Michael at mile 25 who pretty much ran with me until the finish line. He didn’t know it but I needed him a lot then. Thanks 😀

This race made me realize how fortunate I am to have such an incredible support system. It was very much a literal symbolism of my fitness journey – the ups and downs, struggles, distraction, excitement and most importantly the people. I started running for myself and I continue to do so for myself and now also for the people I meet along the way. I aspire to pay it forward by being there for those who need it.

Need a race buddy? Afraid to take a fitness class alone? Want to go for a run or workout? Hit me up. I’ll try my best to be there for you like so many others have been for me.
